Nice - information about the famous cultural and bathing city on the Cote d Azur
Nice - that's Cote d Azur, sun, beach and Mediterranean flair. This is the ‘Promenade des Anglais’, one of the most famous promenades on the Côte d'Azur. This is the picturesque old town with its winding alleyways, the harbour with its impressive yachts, beautiful parks and gardens and the Maritime Alps that rise above the city. This is pleasure, not only in terms of the landscape, but also in culinary terms. The smells everywhere invite you to visit one of the numerous small restaurants and try out the many specialities. Enjoy sitting in the sun in one of the countless street cafés, stroll through the markets or savour a French tart in one of the select patisseries...
Nice is known for its mild and sunny climate and offers many cultural opportunities (theatre, jazz festival, second highest number of museums in France). Nice's unique location on the Côte d'Azur with its fascinating blue water colour and its Baie des Anges with its kilometre-long pebble beach makes it the world-famous spa resort and main town on the French Riviera.

Just a few kilometres north of Nice, you enter a completely different world: mountains instead of beaches, hiking trails instead of promenades, secluded mountain huts instead of sophisticated restaurants. Those who love variety and the absolute solitude and tranquillity of the mountains can enjoy the high recreational value of the hinterland. Impressive railway lines also lead into the hinterland of Nice and the Maritime Alps.
One of the most impressive railway lines in the south of France is the route of the ‘ Train des Pignes ’ between Nice and Digne-les-Bains. The pine cone train travels back and forth between the Côte d'Azur on the Mediterranean and the Alps four times a day over numerous inclines, past wild mountain rivers and rugged slopes. The 150 kilometre long railway line with numerous tunnels and viaducts takes the pine cone train around 3 hours.
The Tenda railway
connects Piemont in Italy with Nice in France and runs directly through the beautiful Maritime Alps. The Tenda railway winds its way from Nice to Saorge over viaducts and through many tunnels. The train runs several times a day from Nice via Léscareène and Sospel through the picturesque Roya Valley to the picture-book village of Breil-sur-Roya and one of the most beautiful medieval mountain villages of Saorge to the terminus at Coni or Cuneo in Italy.
